Where the Path Leads

Where the Path Leads
Dr. Patrick Christopher's studies at USF became the foundation for a career in dentistry. He hopes to return to Sioux Falls to practice some day.

Sometimes the path we are on leads to different places.

Patrick Christopher came to the University of Sioux Falls because it was close to family, and he planned to major in business due to the excellent reputation of the USF Vucurevich School of Business. He changed his mind after being influenced by Dr. Bill Soeffing, Professor of Biology, who "encouraged me in my pursuit to attend dental school and never once doubted I could make it."

"In fact, as I look back, it was Dr. Soeffings' wife, Cassandra, who was my sixth-grade science teacher, who definitely sparked my initial interest in science," he says.

Kim Bartling, former USF Assistant Professor of Communication Studies & Theatre, also had an impact on him. She "continues to be a part of my life and encourages me as I matriculate through the various aspects of my education."

The path changed and has led to great things. Patrick began his dental school training in 2010 at Howard University College of Dentistry in Washington, D.C., and completed the program in 2014. Currently, he is in a six-year residency training for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Missouri- Kansas City School of Medicine. The residency training has two components: two years in medical school to receive his M.D. and four years of surgical training in head and neck surgery.

He also has been involved in mission trips as a health care provider. One of his trips with the Howard University College of Dentistry led him to Cameroon, where he served as part of a medical team.

"I hope to one day return to Sioux Falls and practice there," he says. "To anyone interested in dentistry, surgery, or the path you choose—if I can do it, you can, too."

We feel blessed that USF was part of Patrick's path and grateful for those who make it possible for students like him.
